Installing Design Manager

Top  Previous  Next

The Design Manager Installation works with Microsoft Windows Installer to guide you through the installation process.  The Installation Wizard automatically recognizes your computer’s operating system and updates files as required.

There are a few guidelines to follow when installing any program under Microsoft Windows:

Make sure that your computers are equal to or better than the Installation Requirements (see below).

Close all programs before beginning the installation process.  Make sure you close the program completely and save any work.

Be prepared to restart your computer.   All of the Design Manager installations may require you to restart your computer.

Installation and Hardware Requirements

Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home, Windows Vista (any version), Windows 7 (any version).  The latest service packs and updates should be installed on all operating systems.
1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
256MB of RAM for Windows XP, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit (x86) or 2 GB for 64-bit (x64) for Windows Vista or Windows 7.
1 GB available disk space.
17" or larger monitor recommended (1024 x 768 or widescreen).

Networking Requirements

Peer-to-peer Network:  The computer with the shared drive must have the most robust operating system.  Operating systems are listed from most robust to least:  Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home.
100 M-bit Ethernet or equivalent speed network. Wireless networks are NOT acceptable.
We recommend a dedicated server for 4 users: Windows 2008 Server or Windows 2003 Server with the latest service packs installed.

Optional Requirements (necessary for some functionality):

Microsoft Office 2003 or higher.
TWAIN-compatible scanner.

Starting the Installation

Whether Design Manager is installed on a standalone computer or a network the installation is started in the same manner.

1.Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2.Wait a few seconds for the main menu to appear.

3.If the menu does not appear, then click on Start, select Run, and type D:\setup.exe.  If your CD-ROM drive is not drive letter “D” then substitute the correct letter in place of “D.”

4.Click on the "Run Setup.exe".

5.Wait for the installation to initialize and follow the on-screen prompts.

Note: The portion of the setup that reads “Configuring Windows Installer” can take 10 to 20 minutes if Windows Installer was never previously loaded on the computer.  The percent bar will not move during this loading period.  This delay is due to Microsoft Windows Installer cataloging all of the installed files on your computer and checking them for conflicts.

WARNING:  When upgrading from Design Manager SE6, do not install Design Manager into the same folder as the Design Manager SE6 installation or into any other application directory!

Installing on a Network

To install Design Manager on a peer-to-peer network, you must identify the computer that will act as the server or main computer.  This computer should be the fastest or most modern computer on you network.  If your computers use different versions of Windows then the server must be the computer with the most advanced version of Windows.  For this purpose the Windows versions are rated from most advanced to least advanced as follows:  Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home.  The server must always be turned on and running for anyone to use Design Manager. Note: Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2003 Server can be used as a file server only.  They cannot be used as workstation.

Whether Design Manager has been installed on a peer-to-peer network or a LAN, each computer attached to the server must be set up.

On the computer that is to be the server, run the setup as normal and install to c:\dm2011 or another new directory of your choosing. Make the entire application directory sharable and give users Full Control.

For each other workstation, run the setup from the CD as normal.  The setup wizard will eventually ask you for a location to install Design Manager (this defaults to C:\DM2011).  This needs be set to the Design Manager directory (usually called “DM2011”) on your server.  An example is of this setting is “N:\DM2011” where “N” is your network drive letter and DM2011 is the Design Manager folder or //server/dm2011 where “server” is the name of the computer with the shared Design Manager folder.

WARNING:  When upgrading from Design Manager SE6, do not install Design Manager 2011 into the same folder as the Design Manager 2000 installation or into any other application directory!
